In case of an emergency

SosLifeSaver is a new smartphone app targeting crewmembers, which creates and broadcasts the correct VHF radio message in the event of an emergency.

Although this is something that crew are expected to know, the app is intended to offer redundancy if there is panic or confusion and a quick response is needed.

‘An emergency situation on sea is a stressful episode’, the app’s developer explains. ‘Life depends on the correct behaviour of the skipper and the fulfilment of the skipper’s instructions. LifeSaver helps in those critical situations and gives you all the necessary VHF radio messages and procedures for sea rescue situations or episodes.’

The app offers a ‘Situation Wizard’, which generates the appropriate message based on the specific situation. Each message includes current position, drift, drift-direction and time.

Each message screen shows a step-by-step approach, and builds: MAYDAY, enriched with messages selector, ship details, position and UTC time; PAN PAN, enriched with messages selector, ship details, position and UTC time; SECURITE, enriched with messages selector, ship details, position and UTC time; MAYDAY RELAY, enhanced with ship details, position and UTC time; END of MAYDAY; CANCEL MAYDAY; CANCEL PAN PAN; CANCEL SECURITE; ROUTINE Communication procedures

Additionally LifeSaver shows: VHF Channel usage list; Maritime Q-codes; Phonetic Alphabet. There is also an emergency SMS or email transmission function in nearshore range, a POB button to record the position when someone falls overboard and a Morse-blinking function.
